Contrast - October Theme Day

First day of the month means theme day for the City Daily Photo Community. The October theme is Contrast. I choose this photo when Kenzo 'planted a field' of 200,000 red paper poppies in front of the Place du Capitole in Toulouse, on Friday September 4th. The poppies were remained until the following day, and had been given away to passers-by. The event is in honor of their poppy-inspired fragrance, Flower by Kenzo. There is a contrast here, poppies are grows on the prairie, in the country side, not in the middle of buildings. The red color of artificial poppies are somehow contrast with the brick color of toulouse buildings. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

Monument des Combatants de la Haute-Garonne

Monument for people of Province Haute Garonne (which Toulouse is located) who died during the war. It is located just the opposite of Metro François Ferdier (Metro Ligne B).

The below photo is the same monument from opposite angle, where we could see the trees along Allées Forain-François Ferdier. When we continue this Allées, we will arive at Jardin Royal (Royal Garden).

This is flower selling activity in front of cemetery, just for La Toussaint / All Saints celebration. By the way do you know, in USA, flowers selling in cemetery is illegal? I quote the law :

Sec. 7-34. Merchandising, advertising and signs prohibited. (a) Vending and peddling. No person in any city cemetery shall expose or offer for sale any article or thing, nor shall he station or place any stand, cart, or vehicle for the transportation, sale or display of any such article or thing. (b) Advertising. No person in any city cemetery shall announce, advertise, or call the public attention in any way to any article or service for sale or hire. (c) Signs. No person in any city cemetery shall paste, glue, tack or otherwise post any sign, placard, advertisement, or inscription whatever, nor shall any person erect or cause to be erected any sign whatever on any public lands or highways or roads adjacent to any city cemetery. La Toussaint 2008

La Toussaint or All Saints in France , When the cemetery full with flowers, especially Chrisantemum, when family get together and have nice lunch, stay on the table for four to six hours !

In the Philippines, this day, called "Undas", "Todos los Santos" (literally "All Saints"), and sometimes "Araw ng mga Namayapa" (approximately "Day of the deceased") is observed as All Souls' Day. This day and the one before and one after it is spent visiting the graves of deceased relatives, where prayers and flowers are offered, candles are lit and the graves themselves are cleaned, repaired and repainted.

In Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Croatia, Austria, Romania, Hungary and catholic parts of Germany, the tradition is to light candles and visit the graves of deceased relatives.

In English-speaking countries, the festival is traditionally celebrated with the hymn "For All the Saints" by William Walsham How. The most familiar tune for this hymn is Sine Nomine by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Book of Life and La Toussaint

November 1st is the theme day for City Daily Photo Community with the theme choosen is Books. Today is also important day in France : La Toussaint, fête de tous les saints (All Saints), when people come to visit their loves ones in the cemetery, bring lots of flowers especially Chrisanthemum. The above collage is how I combine this 2 events together, showing some photos which presenting "books of life" of some people. These are not paper printed but mainly grave words on marble.

Its a part of Capitole Building. Listed as historic monument since 1994. The gallery now replaces the old Hall of La Salle des Illustres built in 1674 and destroyed in 1887. This gallery was designed by architect Paul Pujol. It is formed by the meeting room of the old La Salle des Illustres, two rooms for parties, the Throne Room and the Salle des Pas Perdus. It measures 60 m long and 9 meters wide.

Foire Bio - is an event for organics lover to meet and talk and do some transaction. We could find many organics items from raw foods, preserved or cooked foods, soaps, oil for cooking, cosmetics; pot flowers and herbs, until fabrics and apparels.

This event where held at Park La Ramé at Tournefeuille (the suburb of Toulouse) on October 19,2008. There are more then 10.000 visitor this year who attend this exposition. It is good to see more and more people who interest to visit foire bio which may means more people who will use bio / organics product, which is good for the body and environment.

Vide Grenier at Cugnaux

Vide Grenier -literally means clean the attic - is the event arranged by the town hall or any associations related, where people selling their used items. Today after visiting Foire Bio - Expo of organic foods and all other organics items - at Tourneffeuille, I continue to vide grenier at Cugnaux. Both Tournefeuille and Cugnaux is the suburbs of Toulouse.

I arrived after 18.00 pm where many exposant already packed their things. I only could catch this participant who selling his new items. You could see the red symbol is the symbol of Midi Pyrenées where Toulouse is belongs to.

One Fine Day

Still in Place Arnaud Bernard. When the weather is nice, many imigrans from Algeria, Tunisia or Maroc get together for some chat. In this place we could also fine Arabian foods or epicerie selling herbs and spices for Arabic cuisine and also meat with "Halal label".

L'Eglise Saint-Pierre Blagnac

L'eglise Catholique Saint Pierre , Saint-Pierre Catholic Church in Blagnac was build on 11th century. It was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to the god Jupiter.

At the end of the 14th century, the Devoisins family had replaces the old tower by another which was a copy of the one of Saint Sernin Basilica.

This chuch located on the old district of Blagnac, Toulouse suburbs. It used to open from 9.00am to 6.00pm for everyone who want to visit or pray but now - since 1st of April 2008 -had been close for some interior renovation. It will be open again on September 2009.

Rare in a southern city such as Toulouse, this garden offers botanical varieties of the Far East. Designed by the research department of gardens and green spaces as a place of meditation, there is a mineral garden, a red wooden bridge connecting a typical Japanese island which is allegorical paradise. It builds on the established gardens in Kyoto between the fourteenth century and sixteenth century, corresponding to times of Muromachi and Edo. It is isolated from the rest of the park through curtains of greenery and a hill offering some privacy.

Japanese Garden of Toulouse

The Japanese garden in Toulouse is a remarkable park of France located north of downtown Toulouse in the district of Compans Cafarelli. This garden was created in 1981 to meet the wishes of Pierre Baudis during his term as mayor of Toulouse. He appreciated this type of garden during travel, particularly in Dublin. The park closed 7 000 m² is part of a green area of 10 hectares in the heart of recent district Compans-Caffarelli. In 1993, the garden received the national grand prize as a Remarkable Garden .

Interior Saint Michel Jail

This is interior of Saint Michel Jail (Maison d'arrêt Saint Michel). You could see that they put nets to avoid prissoners jumping to the ground. This prison were build in 19th century, with red bricks and little stone, typical Toulousaine Building.

During the Nazi occupation, many were resistant prisoners sentenced to death and executed, as Marcel Langer, head of the 35th brigade FTP-MOI.

The lines of people who want to visit Maison d'arrêt Saint Michel / Prison Saint Michel. This building was open to public during Journée du Patrimoine 21 - 22 September 2008.

We have to qued for 2 hours to enter the building, since for the security reason they only allow 120 visitor inside the building at the same time which result the longggg long queing.

Since the theme of City Daily Photo Blog Community this month is Lines, so I'll continue the series of "lines photo" for some more days to come.

Escalier d'honneur / Honour Staircase will bring you from entrance hall to the first floor of Palais Niel (Niel Palace) . On the top of the stairs you could see the painting of Marechal de France Adolphe Niel, painted by La Rivière in 1860. This monument is not open for public. I have the opportunity to take this photo, when it was open for only 2 days during Journée du Patrimoine 21 - 22 september 2008.

Boucherie Bio Blagnac My Fave Local Shop

First day of the month is the theme day and for this month the theme is your favourite corner store or local shop . This is my fave local shop, Boucherie Bio Blagnac (Blagnac Organic Butcher). This shop just 300 m from my house. The meats are good quality and even it is organic but the price is not so expensive. More over the butcher always create some new recipes which are always nice. Today he prepared sausages with mint. The taste is excellent!

Merci Le Stade - Thank you Stade Toulousain (Toulouse Rugby Team), for wonderful match, even you were not win this time. Yup, unfortunately Stade Toulousain can't have their 4th Trophy of European Rugby Cup. Munster Won 16 - 13. This is the 2nd Tropy for Munster who also won 2 years ago when they play on the final against Biarritz.

I was watching this match together with thousands Toulousains (people of Toulouse) at Place du Capitole, where Mairie de Toulouse (Toulouse Town Hall) put big screen to watch this match together. These are some photos I've made.

This is Place du Capitole with red black flag. When I saw this flag, I thought it was the flag to support earth quake in Myanmar and China. I was totally wrong. It is the flag of Stade Toulousain, the Rugby Team of Toulouse who will play against Munster, The Irish Rugby team on Final of European Rugby Cup this afternoon at Cardiff.

One said, Stade Toulousain vs Munster its like AC Milan vs Real Madrid. Toulouse Town Hall have prepare big screen on Place du Capitole, so Les Toulousains could watch this match together at 18.00 CET. Wanna join me ? Go Toulouse Go, get your 4th Trophy !!!!

Around 20 thousands employee both from goverment and private company walking on the streets of Toulouse Today, demanding guarantee retreat system. This also happen on others city in France. It reached 600 000 people for all France who participate on today's demonstration.

This is another photo of Toulouse in numbers as promised on my previous post. Sorry for keeping you wait sooooo long. I have problem with my memory card (can't download it to my pc and finaly all the photos i have prepared was dissapeared). Today I have a chance to make new photo and share it to you. I do appologize.

This sign mentioned that at that place Duc of Mont Morency was being executed on October 30th, 1632.

Who is Duc de Motmorency? Duc de Mont Morency or Henri II de Montmorency (1595 - October 30, 1632), son of duke Henry I, succeeded to the title in 1614, having previously been made grand admiral. He also was governor of Languedoc.

In 1625 he defeated the French Protestant fleet under Soubise, and seized the islands of Ré and Oleron, but the jealousy of Richelieu deprived him of the means of following up these advantages. In 1628-1629 he was allowed to command against the duke of Rohan in Languedoc; in 1630 he defeated the Piedmontese, and captured Prince Doria, at Avigliana, and took Saluzzo. In the same year he was created marshal.

In 1632 he joined the party of Gaston, duke of Orleans, and placed himself at the head of the rebel army, which was defeated by Marshal Schomberg at Castelnaudary (September 1, 1632); severely wounded, he fell into the enemy's hands, and, abandoned by Gaston, was executed as a traitor at Toulouse on October 30. The title passed to his sister Charlotte-Marguerite, princess of Condé.

Toulouse's Graffiti - March photo theme.

At Toulouse downtown, it was quite difficult to find graffiti. I managed to get some at the old factory which now being abandoned. I think in short periode of time this place will be replace by nice appartement.

I took a bit risk to take this picture. What risk? You see, when enter this place there is a note says :"DANGER AMIANTE" (means : Danger Asbestos !). You may know Amiante / Asbestos exposure could lead to Mesothelioma cancer. But I think if we stay for only 1 minute, it caused nothing, right ? I hope so :))

Theme Day : The Best of the Year

The best photo of the year. I have no difficulty to choose one, because i have one photo which will be the best photo of all time (for me personally). This photo was taken by myself just 7 hours after my baby was born. After i gave her first bath, breast fed her and when she was ready to sleep, she make this notion. It seem she is very religious at very early day. I was touched ! From the photo already upload to this blog, I choose the Viaduct of Millau, which is the photo of December 1st. I choose this one because many people love it.

Sorry for being a little bit late to upload the photo. Yesterday Dec 31st is my 9th wedding anniversary. We celebrate it together with our neighbours as our new year eve party, stay until morning, have a little sleep and then again having lunch together. You know, when french eating, it means 6 hours at table !!! Now my neighbours still at home, I take a little minutes to create this blog.

September theme : Street Signs

This is a street sign of Bayonne, a city in Pays Basque / Basque Country, south west of France, less then half an hour drive from Spain border.

I've choosen this photo as my theme day photo - instead of street sign of Toulouse, my city - for some reasons :

* The street sign at Bayonne is unique since its written in 3 languages (see the top of the sign) : first language is French (Bayonne Cathédrale); 2nd is Basque (Baiona Katedrala) and the 3rd (Bayoune Catedrala) I don't know what language it is, maybe Occitane.

* The second sign was the sign of Fêtes de Bayonne (Bayonne Festival / summer party) which attracted thousands and thousands of people from around the world. Massive of people in white and red enjoy the party from morning until the next morning for five days ! This year was my 5th opportunity attending this party. I've several time arranged get together with my virtual friends (friends I knew from internet) at this periode of fêtes and we always had good time. That's why I put this photo as and invitation to all my DP friends and especially my french friends (Marie - Montpellier, Jilly - Menton, Eric - Paris, PaB - Baziege, Matthieu -cherbourg, etc, etc) DP friends from Europe or whoever want, come and join me next year !!! (I could arrange accomodation and other things needed).

PS : Since many of you think that the woman on this photo holding the fêtes de Bayonne sign. I need to put another photo to make clarification. This woman not holding the sign. She is not the bottled water seller either nor just posing for me. She was the woman who help to organize the traffic during the fêtes. The bottles are ready for people who maybe got sick because of hot weather while got trapped in the traffic. When took this photo I was inside my car on the way to Anglet beach and my car was stuck for some minutes because of the street "diversion" (using Hyde DP word) during the fêtes.

My Typical Breakfast

My family and I eat croissant au beurre on Saturday and or Sunday morning (or on holiday). Some of french CDP participants may present croissant as their theme photo, make eat croissants not so typical anymore. This is my typical breakfast : Lebanese Baklava. I ate Baklava a lot. For some the quantity I have almost every day could be consider 'over dose'. I eat baklava for breakfast when I am too busy or when I am not in good mood. Because of too much eating baklava I ever got gestational diabetic during my last pregnancy, 2 years ago . Now thing back to normal so I could again have my "bad habit brekky", sometime.

The Prairie des Filtres, originally a marshy island of little interest which had sanded up over the years ; was used as a natural filter for the water pumped from Garonne up to Château d'Eau Laganne / Laganne Water Tower . This little park near Garonne River is a nice place to go for nice walk or just get relax.

From my 07/07/07 party last night, I present to you this typical french dessert. This Pièce Montée we usually have for special celebration such as weddings, baptisms and special birthdays. For his special birthday (the 50th), Thierry has Pièce Montée with the form of Aeroplane ! I think Thierry has good choice of Pièce Montée in the form of aeroplane. Why? On the 07/07/07, many couples got married and I think many has Pièce Montée but with traditional form (conical shape). Thierry's one is different and of course make it special. Some more info for you, the term pièce montée is sometimes used to refer to the dessert also known as croquembouche, an assemblage of cream puffs (or occasionally other kinds of candy or pastry) stuck together with caramel or spun sugar into a tall, usually conical shape.

PS : Don't you think it is triple 7 of Boeing (Boeing 777) ? :))

Place du Capitole / Capitole Square located in the center of Toulouse. This place had many names before been called Place du Capitole : Place Royale and then Place de la Liberté ( Révolution periode), Place Commune, Place de la Mairie, Place Impériale (since 1812), place de l'Hôtel de Ville and also la place d'Armes. It start to be called Place du Capitole since 1848. This biq square always busy nights and days, surrounded by many shops, cafes and restaurant. Every wednesday there is huge market selling almost everythings.

Château d'eau Laganne

This place when it was as Château d'eau or water tower was named after Capitoul Charles Laganne who in 1789 bequeathed 50 000 gold francs, so that water could become public property and accessible to all habitants of Toulouse. Today - Since 1974 - it is being widely renowned as a galery, museum and exhibition centre for photography and have new name : Galerie du chateau d'eau Jean Dieuzaide . It was Jean Dieuzaide who took the inisiatif to dedicate this place as photography gallery. This place is the first place in France dedicated to photography.

This is the main entrance of l'Ecole Elémentaire René Cassin where my boy went through every morning. Start this afternoon this door had been closed. It will be open again on September 3rd for the teachers to get prepared and on September 4th it will welcome again all the students. School summer holiday for 2 months has arrived ! Tomorrow my kids will join club holiday but only for 2 days. They will play and have many activities in small group. The club start from 09.00 am and finish at 17.45

Our family holiday this year will be kinda special, since we will have caravan adventure and will visit many places in France from South West to East.

Did you remember, at my first post, I said that I am going to Fête des Rues (Street Party) ? This photo was taken there, show 2 men played percussion while at the same time they blew up firework. There was 150 artists who participate in this event. It took place at Blagnac Neighborhood.
