When it's moved, the particles become airborn and harmful to humans. If it's left in place, there is very little danger.

Twin Cities Daily PhotoSteve Cuddihyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08617072941840879211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199865253505916565.post-78668710253595451542008-03-01T21:16:00.000+01:002008-03-01T21:16:00.000+01:00But I guess what the man in his mouth in the graff...But I guess what the man in his mouth in the graffiti has is more dangerous! You captured a good one.

Good grief, though! I can't believe any civic area would really allow uncontained asbestos sites in the open air where the breeze could carry the particulates to the surroundings. I'm sure they must have cleaned it up pretty well by now. But, they put up the sign because they can't garantee it's 100% gone, because no one is safe around asbestos that has been particulated and released during demolition unless they are wearing a respirator. Your chances of exposure are certainly very, very, very teeny tiny minimal in the open air during a brief time of being there. The sign was probably put up to keep people from scrounging around for scap in the debris or tearing anything else down and getting possible exposure that way. I think it takes a lot of exposure over time. As a naval officer for 20 years my dad served duty on board 3 US Navy ships while they were being refurbished (stripping paint, repainting, maintenance, remodleing, etc.), and died of mesothelioma after a 6 month illness 40 years after these intense, close-hand exposures. . .so it took a lot of exposure over time and 40 years until the cancer developed and he was aware he had even been at risk. The Navy took full responsibility and helped him a great deal when he became ill, giving my mom the highest amount of pension that could be alloted when he died.
-Kim
Seattle Daily PhotoKimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03687351187791689224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199865253505916565.post-48348714750492340072008-03-01T19:54:00.000+01:002008-03-01T19:54:00.000+01:00I love that shot!
